Mary Bieber

Dietary Manager

Mary has enjoyed serving nutritional and delicious meals that meet patient’s individual dietary needs. She has worked in the dietary department for 24 years and oversees the daily running of the department including ordering food and supplies. The dietary department also enjoys making visitors feel at home by offering hot food, a salad bar, cold sandwiches and scrumptious desserts daily in the café.

Tonya Bowrey

Rehabilitative Services Manager/Occupational Therapist

Tonya Bowrey, OTR/L is the Rehabilitative Services Manager/Occupational Therapist at Shelby Memorial Hospital. Her primary focus is to provide occupational therapy services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, helping patients regain functionality after an illness or injury. She is a licensed occupational therapist with 16 years of experience in providing quality patient care. Ms. Bowrey graduated from Washington University School of Medicine St. Louis, Missouri, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Occupational Therapy Health Sciences. She comes to SMH after spending much of her 16-year career at Decatur Memorial Hospital where she started as an Occupational Therapist and later became the Manager of Rehabilitation Services. She is nationally board certified and is an active participant in community and outreach activities.

Director of Environmental Services

With 36 years as an experienced healthcare director, including 28 in a senior level management role, Rick is has been instrumental in creating a comfortable environment for the staff, patients and visitors at Shelby Memorial Hospital. He has implemented automation to the building's boilers, water treatment and HVAC systems, creating cost savings for the hospital as well as a more cozy facility. Rick's clinical background is in Bio-Medical Engineering, Facility Services, Telecommunications and Safety Management, which gives him a complete understanding of the operational roles of the building and grounds. "I am committed to the hospital's continued growth and success by finding ways to cut costs, which enables us to provide even more exceptional care to our patients."

Sheli Evans, RN

Emergency Department Manager

Working in the Emergency Department at SMH is fulfilling and rewarding for Sheli, who started her career as a nursing assistant at the hospital in 1991. She finds it very satisfying to help people in their time of need and also make sure their friends and family members are comfortable and educated. Sheli graduated from Lake Land College with an associate’s degree in nursing and worked in the Med-Surg and CCU departments at SMH for seven years before becoming the ER/House Supervisor in 2000. From 2004 until 2010, Sheli oversaw not only the Emergency Department but also the entire Med-Surg unit. Currently, she is strictly the Emergency Department manager, supervising the staff and handling the day-to-day needs of the department.

Suzanne Gathe

Respiratory Therapy Manager

Helping patients recover is the one thing Suzanne really enjoys about her job as Respiratory Therapy Manager. “I most enjoy caring for the critically ill patients and seeing the positive outcome that impacts their future.” Suzanne has worked at Shelby Memorial Hospital since 2007 and not only loves helping patients but also enjoys working with the staff. She said the staff is like a family who all care about each other and the duties they perform.

Roxie Gentry, MT(ASCP)

Laboratory Manager

After being with a larger hospital for seven years, Roxie has truly enjoyed the nine years at Shelby Memorial Hospital because of its personal atmosphere and opportunity to grow relationships with patients. After taking care of regular patient activities like drawing blood and explaining specimen collection procedures, patients often share pictures of new grandchildren, stories about loved ones or other personal narratives. That said, Roxie said people should not be fooled by the hospital and lab’s small size. “We process over 100,000 laboratory tests each year. The rules and regulations we follow are just as stringent as those of the largest hospitals in the nation.” Roxie is very proud of the job she and her staff provide to patients in assisting doctors in diagnosing, treating and monitoring. The lab’s goal is to “Do our part to save lives and stamp out disease!”

Lorrie Hayden

Manager of Medical Records

Not only has Lorrie worked in four different areas at SMH for over 22 years, she is also dedicated to making sure the hospital is a presence in the community by serving as Relay for Life captain, a member of the employee committee and secretary for the hospital foundation board. Lorrie says, “I want others to know what a great facility we have and that our caring employees are here to take care of our community’s healthcare needs.” Now managing the Medical Records Department, Lorrie has also worked as a receptionist, transcriptionist and a medical coder at SMH and in fact holds a certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Certified Coding Specialist.

Senior Accountant/Internal Auditor

Having been raised in Shelbyville, Tracie is truly grateful for the services Shelby Memorial Hospital offers in her community.  As an employee of SMH she is responsible for preparing budgets, financial and statistical reports as well as overseeing daily accounting procedures like payroll.  She also works with outside auditors to ensure the accuracy of all financial transactions at SMH.  Tracie graduated from Eastern Illinois University and worked in the private accounting sector before starting with SMH in 2006.

Rande Hempen

Director of Pharmacy

In his many years of experience in the pharmacy world, Rande has come to realize that small hospitals like SMH have several advantages, including getting to know patients on a personal level. He also enjoys working hand-in-hand with the staff and getting to know the staff of the hospital. Rande graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy in May 1997. In February 1998, he completed the Cardinal Health Director in Training Program in Dallas, Texas. The following month he started his work at Shelby Memorial Hospital. The pharmacy department at SMH strikes to improve patient care and their experience by using advanced technology like bedside barcode scanning of medications. This procedure decreases the risk of medication errors.

Diane Holthaus, RN

Manager Family Healthcare Center

Diane’s personal motto: Strive for Excellence. “We need to be constantly looking inward and challenging ourselves to perform to the very best of our ability. After all, our patients deserve our very best.” As manager of the Family Healthcare Center, Diane provides direction and supervision of the nursing staff, conducts education seminars, reviews protocols and policies and provides services in accordance with those policies. She has worked in her current position since 2009 but also spent four years as SMH Skilled Care Unit Manager. Early in her career, Diane also took classes offered at the hospital and worked as an LPN and RN on the medical/surgical unit. Diane believes that smaller, rural hospitals like SMH provide an essential lifeline to local residents and is proud to be a part of SMH.

Manager of Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab, Specialty Outpatient Clinic and Infection Control

The family environment is what Penny likes most about Shelby Memorial Hospital. She likes the feeling a small, rural hospital has and also the great level of care that SMH can offer. Penny has worked at SMH for over 15 years and was born and raised in Shelbyville. She truly enjoys the positive environment in the cardio-pulmonary department and enjoys bringing patients into that environment to get better.

Materials Manager/Shelby Home Equipment Manager

Brad wears two hats for Shelby Memorial Hospital as Materials Manager as well as manager of Shelby Home Equipment, the durable medical equipment company SMH owns. In both his positions, though, the most important aspect to Brad is customer service. “What we do and how we do it makes all the difference in whether someone is satisfied and will return again, and just as important, what they will tell others about their experience.” In the Materials Management Department, Brad and his staff do their best to take care of the needs of the patients as well as the needs of every department in the hospital. Through Shelby Home Equipment, Brad makes sure customers who need equipment or supplies are taken care of. He has been in purchasing at SMH for 16 years and looks forward to helping the hospital move forward and grow.

Human Resource Director

Amy got an early start at Shelby Memorial Hospital ¬– she was born there! Born and raised in Shelbyville, Amy worked in Administration until 2000 when she took over her current position as Human Resource Director. Her responsibilities include handling health insurance, pension, payroll, new hires and employee benefits. She finds it a pleasure to work in a wonderful hospital in a great community she has called home her entire life.

Manager of Patient Accounting

Linda is committed to a positive registration experience for every patient that walks through the Shelby Memorial Hospital and rural health clinic doors. She also strives for accuracy during registration as well as billing. As a business office, Linda said they also take great pride in assisting uninsured and underinsured patients take care of their hospital bills. Linda has worked at SMH for over 21 years and enjoys the challenges associated with her job.

Quality Assurance/Risk Management Coordinator

Lisa brings eight years of clinical nursing experience to Shelby Memorial Hospital. Having worked at both large and small medical facilities throughout her career, she has a great appreciation for what a small community hospital has to offer to both the community and to employees. She really enjoys the close relationships that are formed with both patients and staff where patients feel more like neighbors, and work associates feel more like family. Lisa graduated from Lincoln Land Community College in 2003 with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Her goal as quality assurance/risk management coordinator is to help make sure SMH is meeting the needs of every person using our services and to ensure that each patient experience is a remarkable one.

Housekeeping Director

After 42 years of service to Shelby Memorial Hospital, Martha has no plans for retirement. “I’ve considered it a joy to have been able to be a part of this organization and look forward to being here a few more years. I’ve been proud of my service to my community through Shelby Memorial Hospital.” Martha began her remarkable career at SMH on January 22, 1968, in the laundry department. Two years later, after the birth of her son, Miller returned from a short three-week maternity leave to work in the housekeeping department. In 1973, after the retirement of Veda Shallenbarger, Martha was promoted to Housekeeping Director. Martha said through her job she has met wonderful people, both patients and staff.

Tabitha Moffett, RN

Surgical Services Manager

Tabitha graduated from Olney Central College in 2007 with an associate's degree in nursing. Her long term nursing goal is to always be learning something new about her profession as the medical field is always evolving. She came to Shelby Memorial Hospital in Dec. 2010 as a nurse in surgery, and became the Surgical Services Manager in July 2011. She had previously worked at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in the surgery department for 4 years. What she likes best about SMH, is being able to provide patients the opportunity to have their surgical procedures close to home.

Service Coordinator, New Vision Service

Caroline and her staff at New Vision believe every patient should be treated with dignity and respect, no matter what illness they are suffering from. New Vision, SMH’s medical stabilization program for people who are experiencing withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and/or drugs, has been at SMH since 2004 and Caroline has been at its helm since 2005. She previously worked at a private psychiatric and substance abuse facility in Vermont. The services offered through New Vision are routinely praised by patients, families and agencies assisting those families. “We take great pride in the care and compassion we show each and every patient and their family in their time of need,” said Caroline.

Rebecca Seibert, RN, BSN

Medical/Surgical Manager

Rebecca knows good care is key to a great hospital and her goal every day is to teach her staff to grow and develop to their full potential in order to give exceptional care to every patient at SMH. A third-generation healthcare provider at Shelby Memorial Hospital, Rebecca graduated from Millikin University with a bachelor of science in nursing. She worked as a staff nurse for many years before stepping into the Medical/Surgical Manager position. That background allows her to understand the complex needs of the patients and the amount of work that goes into providing excellent patient care. Rebecca is very proud of the fact that the diagnostic equipment utilized by SMH is up to date and the technology used in their charting methods exceeds a large percent of hospitals in the nation. Her number one goal is to use that technology to provide quality patient care. “I feel that my most important job as the nurse manager is to ensure that Shelby Memorial staff gives the best care to the patients we serve.”

Maintenance Manager

JR takes great pride in making sure the entire Shelby Memorial Hospital facility is functioning properly and efficiently inside and out while also taking great care in making sure the entire hospital campus is well maintained and a warm and inviting place for people to come. JR has worked at SMH since 2001 and is in charge of all facilities management functions, repairs inside and outside of the building, mowing, landscaping and snow removal.

Diagnostic Imaging Director

Amy started her career at Shelby Memorial Hospital in 2003 as a Radiologic Technologist after graduating with a degree in Radiologic Technology from Kaskaskia College in Centralia, IL. She became manager of the entire department in 2006 and in 2009 passed her CT Registry. Amy is excited to lead an experienced and technology-driven department that helps physicians not only treat and diagnose problems but also provides everyone the opportunity to remain healthy with yearly screening exams.
