There is no need to travel when surgery is the option for your care. SMH welcomes Truman Mark Vasko, MD, FACS. Dr. Vasko is a General Surgeon. Services include endoscopy, colonoscopy, hernia repairs, skin cancer and lesion removals and laparoscopic gallbladder and other abdominal procedures.

Hospitalist Program

A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients while they are in the hospital. Their time is devoted to caring for hospitalized patients. Hospitalists manage and coordinate all aspects of your hospital care - from admission until discharge - working closely with your primary care physician and/or specialists involved.

Board of Directors Unlike the corporate world, most hospitals, especially those which are not part of a larger health system, many in rural communities such as ours, don't have stockholders; however, they do have stakeholders. Stakeholders are individuals or groups that benefit from the hospital’s quality services. A hospital's stakeholders can include its patients, families, employees and the physicians and nurses who provide care, as well as the community at large. Stakeholders all benefit when the hospital is successful. Shelby Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization.

The SMH Board of Directors is comprised of a group of dedicated, professional and involved community members. As trustees of the organization, their duty is to represent the best interests of the hospital’s stakeholders, setting direction and goals by:

Adopting broad policies
Making major decisions
Selecting and evaluating the chief executive
Evaluating the hospital’s performance
