Board of Directors
Governing Board
Unlike the corporate world, most hospitals, especially those which are not part of a larger health system, many in rural communities such as ours, don't have stockholders; however, they do have stakeholders. Stakeholders are individuals or groups that benefit from the hospital’s quality services. A hospital's stakeholders can include its patients, families, employees and the physicians and nurses who provide care, as well as the community at large. Stakeholders all benefit when the hospital is successful. Shelby Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization.
The SMH Board of Directors is comprised of a group of dedicated, professional and involved community members. As trustees of the organization, their duty is to represent the best interests of the hospital’s stakeholders, setting direction and goals by:
- Adopting broad policies
- Making major decisions
- Selecting and evaluating the chief executive
- Evaluating the hospital’s performance
